Swinnerton Cycles: Tradition and Passion for Bicycles

Swinnertons Cycles was founded in 1915 by Roy's parents and was then located above the shop at 69 Victoria Road. Notably, the shop can still be found at the same address over 95 years later. Roy's parents retired in 1954, when Roy and Doris took over the shop, knowing that the motorcar was gaining in popularity. For £100 they bought the entire stock and moved in above the shop in 1958, which became both their family home and workplace. Roy worked part-time in the shop at the time, while Doris worked full-time, until Roy gave up his full-time job as General Manager at a local engineering company in 1970. They acquired numbers 71, 67 and finally number 73 Victoria Road, which is now known as Swinnerton Cycles. After 36 years of working together, seven children, 22 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, they retired and passed the baton to the next generation. Roy started his cycling career in 1939 with The St Christopher's, Doris followed shortly after in 1944. They married in 1950, the same year Doris was elected Club President. Doris was also involved in the founding of Lyme and was elected President in 1956. In the 1960s, both Roy and Doris helped to found the Newcastle Track Associations. They supported Nolen Burgess in founding the North Staffordshire Cycling Associations, which united all the clubs under one roof. Sadly, the NSCA no longer exists, although many think it should be revived. In 1970, Roy and Doris were asked to lead a cycling section for the City of Stoke Athletic Club. The Stoke ACCS was founded and developed into one of the most successful clubs. At the time, there were at least 15 clubs. The Stoke AC can boast members who have participated in the Tour de France...
